## Knowledge Base Categories

Categories allow you to organize [entries](knowledge-base-entries) into logical groups. In the public view of the [knowledge base](knowledge-base), categories are displayed in the sidebar navigation.

## Tree Structure

Categories can be nested — a parent category can have subcategories (one level deep). This helps organize content better.

## Category Properties

- **Name** — displayed in navigation
- **Description** — additional text
- **URL** — slug (unique within the knowledge base)
- **Priority** — display order (changed with up/down arrows)
- **Private** — visible only to logged-in users with permissions
- **Knowledge Base** — which knowledge base it belongs to
- **Parent Category** — optional (for subcategories)
- **Image** — optional category image

## Entry Order

Within a category, you can set the default entry display order — e.g., by priority, creation date, title. If not set, the order from the knowledge base settings is used.

## Privacy

A private category is visible only to users with permissions. Subcategories of a private category inherit the privacy setting.

## API Documentation

A category can have a `content_api` field — technical documentation displayed in an API context.
